At Wheelhouse Alloys we see many wheels with a diamond cut finish. This is essentially a painted wheel which has a cut surface where the paint has been removed on a lathe to give a two tone effect. Diamond cut wheels come with a vast array of patterns and paint colours and they can make a car really stand out. Because the cut surface is only protected by a coat of lacquer this type of finish does not have the longevity of a fully powder coated and painted wheel. When they are damaged or corroded there is a bit more to refurbishing them than a simple painted wheel.
In order to re-cut a diamond cut wheel there are a number of essential requirements. The wheel must spin true on the lathe to achieve a clean even cut. Therefore bent / buckled wheels cannot always be re-cut. In addition there must be sufficient metal left on the diamond cut areas to enable the wheel to be cut down to the bottom of the damage / defects without cutting the painted areas. Most modern wheels can only be re-cut 1-2 times before re-cutting is not possible.
At Wheelhouse alloys we recommend bringing your vehicle in to see us so we can assess your wheels suitability for re-cutting. There are various factors to assess that are not possible to gauge from a photo. If your wheel is not suitable there will be other options available from SMART repairing to refurbishing all four wheels one colour.
If your wheel is suitable for diamond cutting then we follow the same process as for a full refurbishment but with an extra step in between painting and lacquering. The wheel is put in the lathe and the intended cut surface plotted. Once we have a plot of the wheel we can edit this plot to remove kerb damage / defects and then create a program to re-cut the wheel.
